When a die rolls its maximum value, it is then considered a critical and can now be re-rolled to further add to your total rolled number. This potential is unlimited. If a player were to roll a critical on a d6 eighty-seven times, then they would have rolled 522 against their opponent.
A player is using an Attack Technique and rolls Event 34, which is d12 + d14 + d18 + d20. The dice come up with a 2, 14, 9, and a 20, with a total of 45. Since a d14 rolled a 14 and the d20 rolled a 20, both at their maximum value, they are re-rolled and their new values are added to the original 45.
Any 1’s that are rolled in an Event roll, cancel another die that has rolled a Critical. If you have more critical dice than 1’s, you may choose which critical dice the 1’s negate.
You roll 3d4 + 3d6 + d18 for a Skill. The dice come up with a 2, 3, 4 + 1, 6, 5 + 18. Three criticals have been rolled but since a 1 has been rolled as well, you may choose either to negate the d4, the d6 or the d18, and then re-roll the non-canceled criticals.
If you roll more 1’s than half of your total Dice Pool, you have rolled a Critical Failure. When calculating the total of the roll, only the 1’s are counted. All other dice are discarded.
*Arbiter's discretion on any story line plot or penalty in combat.
You roll 5D12 for a Skill. The dice come up with 1, 1, 5, 8, 1. Since your total Dice Pool is five dice, and three of them have rolled 1s, you have now Critically Failed. You may only count the 1’s for roll, so this Dice Roll is a 3.
You will obtain and choose additional dice that you will be added to your total Dice Pool. Bonus Dice can be added through Expertise, weapons, Prowess and other mechanics.
Adding Bonus Dice is cumulative, so each one is added to the last, giving you a larger Dice Pool as your Bonus Dice increase.
Some instances will call for a die to be upgraded a Dice Tier. Below is a chart showing the flow.
1d4 -> 1d6 -> 1d8 -> 1d10 -> 1d12 -> 1d14 -> 1d16 -> 1d18 -> 1d20 -> 2d12 -> 2d14 -> 2d16 -> 2d18 -> 2d20 -> 3d14 -> 3d16 -> 3d18 -> 3d20 -> 4d16 -> 4d18 -> 4d20 -> 5d18 -> 5d20
When you are injured or affected by negative spell effects that cause you to lose enough Bonus Dice to be returned to your base Event Step, then a careful process is maintained.
Since you have one further Die to reduce your total from, you will take the highest Dice Tier, and downgrade it 1 Dice Tier.
If lose any additional die, you would follow the same process as before until all you have left are d4's.
